Do I need to use a check valve if I am going from a sump pump to a sewage pump? The septic exit site is only about 5 feet above the top of the ejector pit.

If the sump pump's outlet is lower then the inlet to the ejector pit the answer's yes. You'll need a check valve to prevent backflow. Good luck, Tom

With a sewage ejector you want to install a check valve to keep the last bunch of sewage water that gets pumped up from falling back into the ejector pit... why pay to pump it out twice, right?
You should also install a 2" PVC butterfly valve above the check valve so you can service both the pump and the check valve should either fail/malfunction in the future... ;)
Good luck!
