There is a hissing sound coming from the water pipe in the basement that is before the water meter. The hissing sound happens whether there is water being used or not. If I put my hand around the pipe, it deadens the sound. There are no leaks.

What causes this? I don't want the pipe to burst and flood the basement. Should I call a plumber?

Thanks,
Scot

Hissing noise is caused by a leak from somewhere and the fact that it's upstream from the water meter makes it the city responsibly to check it out and repair it. If the leak were downstream the cost would be on you. Call the water department and be sure to tell them the hissing is on their side of the meter. Good luck, Tom

Thanks! Its upstream from the water meter but downstream from the water main which is up by the street. I think it will still be my problem. But thanks for the reply telling what the cause is!

Unless things are different n your area everything to the curb side of the water meter is the citys responsibility. Check with the city before you hire a plumber. Good luck. Tom
