How long does it take the state to garnish your wages for back taxes?

Garnishment actions vary, depending on who is driving the action and the REASON for the garnishment. It could happen as soon as next week, or it might take up to TWO years.

If you think that you owe back taxes, the best thing you can do is deal with them asap. Why? Because even if it takes 2 years for them to track you down, the interest on any money you owe the government will have started accruing since day one. This happened to me, and while I thought I was just avoiding something I didn't want to deal with, it was a nasty surprise when it finally caught up with me. And then there's ~no~ way to avoid it! My advice is contact an online expert service. They usually can give you advice and help you get started dealing with your back taxes. There's a site called Prior Tax out there that specializes in exactly that. They helped me tons. Plus they have live support that's really friendly and helps you understand everything. Good luck!
