I turned off the water supply at the entrance to the house, drained the water in the pipes, and left the hot and cold spigots open. I turned down the hot water heater. Now I got to thinking - was I wrong in leaving the hot water spigot open - will it drain the water heater and I'll have a major explosion? Thanks.

You did turn off the power or gas to the hot water heater ?

You did not leave it on and turn the water off to it did you ?

The power is on to the hot water heater. I left the water heater on, but turned down the level of heat. I turned off the water to the house and left the hot and cold water spigots open. Now I got to thinking - was I wrong in leaving the hot water spigot open - will it drain the water heater and damage it?

Not to worry! The pressure's off and the worst that will happen is that you'll have hot water when you get back home. My concern is , did you leave some heat left bon in the house? Even though you turned then water off you still have water in the pipes, traps and toilets.

leaving for 3 months to warmer weather. I live on The Gulf Coast in southwest Florida. You Yankees are what keeps Florida green in the winter. Enjoy your vacation. Tom

Speedball1: thank you. I did leave the heat on. This is the first time I'm gone so long so decided to turn off the water, but have left the thermostat at 55 and there is a warning light for condo neighbors if it drops too cold in the condo. And, I'm glad us Yankees are able to help out Florida. Hope you return the favor to Michigan in the summer!

so long so decided to turn off the water,Turning off the water when you leave is the cheapest insurance you'll ever buy. A small leak running 24/7 would destroy your home.

I'm glad us Yankees are able to help out Florida. Hope you return the favor to Michigan in the summer! Not me! Anything north of Tampa is too far north for me. We moved down from Wisconsin over55 years ago just to get out of that climate. Summer's for the beach. Have a great time. Tom
