Only if prescribed by your doctor. Typically it is used to prevent angina, or chest pain, and is also used to improve survival rate after a heart attack.

Was this prescribed for you or for someone else?

I would doubt your doctor would give you that for high blood pressure, I take ( or have taken that) for my chest pains but not for my blood pressure, for that I take other medication.

It is a beta blocker...
Metoprolol is used alone or in combination with other medications to treat high blood pressure.

Found here... Metoprolol - PubMed Health (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedhealth/PMH0000795/)

Are you overweight? It is possible, if you are, that the size of cuff required to get an accurate reading is not the one in the automatic BP machine. The result of a poorly fitted cuff is incorrect readings.

Regardless, you need to see a Doctor. Anything over 120/80 is broken up into four levels.

Normal : less than 120 and less than 80
Pre-hypertension: 120 - 139 or 80 - 89
High Blood Pressure(Hypertension) Stage 1: 140 - 159 or 90 - 99
High Blood Pressure(Hypertension) Stage 2: 160 or higher or 100 or higher
Hypertensive Crisis(Emergency care needed): Higher than 180 or Higher than 110
