My dryer had the same problem. There is a plastic slide bearing on top just inside the door lining the drum. It is worn and out of round and has to be replaced. As the drum spins it rubs againt the distorted bearing and causes a loud squeeling. You can buy a replacement from Sears for about $20. TJ

Some GE dryers have a drum bearing that will burn out due to lack of grease. You will need to replace it if it has started squealing. Here are some manuals: https://dl.dropbox.com/u/8010163/GE%20Dryer%20%20Manuals.zip
You will also need to tear it down into parts to clean it all out and grease all other bearings and rollers with white lithium grease. When you tear it down it's a good idea to replace the belt unless it's new. Belts are cheap.
