I recently got pulled over for expired tags. When asked for a copy of insurance I realized it was 6 days expired. I was immediately arrested in brought to jail. I had to pay 300 dollars bond. I live in ward county North Dakota and have no criminal background whatsoever. I'm wondering if this is illegal.

Expired tags AND expired auto insurance? If anyone was illegal, it was you. I'm glad you weren't in an accident too. Be glad you got off so easily -- and please learn from this experience.

I know in my state, if you have no insurance the police officer is required to arrest you, the police officer does not even have a choice, It is that serious offense.
Expect your drivers license to be suspended ( maybe)
If you have your tags and your insurance back in force before court, it will go better, show it to the officer.
Most likely expect fines of 500 to 800 dollars most likely perhaps license suspended for 30 days ( maybe)

Hello r:
Where I live, not having insurance isn't treated WORSE than speeding. Having said that, cops CAN take people to jail for traffic infractions... However, doing so seems EXCESSIVE to me, and I'd run it by a lawyer just to see what my options are, if any.

Illegal, definitely not. Excessive maybe? You were driving illegally. Without in-force registration and insurance the car was not allowed to be on the road. So you broke the law by driving the car.
Since you could not, legally, drive the car, the officer was within his rights not to let you drive any further. The car should have been impounded.
