I have the Mirena IUD and have had it for about 2 years, but lately I feel pregnant I have most of the pregnancy symptoms my husband didn't wear a condom, has any one else gotten pregnant on the Mirena? Did you ever get a positive home test? Were your symptoms just like a normal pregnancy? Thanks for your help

Yes, a nurse I work with in the OB unit did indeed get pregnant with the Mirena. She did get a positive HPT as well as the pregnancy symptoms.

If you think you may be pregnant please make an appointment with your OB/GYN.

What if I become pregnant while using Mirena?
Unfortunately, no birth control method, including Mirena or even getting your tubes tied, is 100% perfect. If you do get pregnant while using a birth control method, there can be risks to you and your baby. Here we talk about the risks of getting pregnant while Mirena is still in place.

Less than 8 in 1,000 women become pregnant over the course of the five years using Mirena. One risk of getting pregnant using Mirena is called ectopic pregnancy, when the pregnancy is not in the uterus. It may occur in the fallopian tubes. Signs of ectopic pregnancy may include unusual bleeding or abdominal pain. Ectopic pregnancy is an emergency that requires immediate medical attention and often surgery. Ectopic pregnancy can cause internal bleeding, infertility and even death. Call your healthcare provider right away if you think that you're pregnant.

There are also risks if you get pregnant while using Mirena and the pregnancy is in the uterus. Severe infection, miscarriage, premature delivery and even death can occur with pregnancies that continue with an intrauterine device (IUD). Because of this, your healthcare provider may try to remove Mirena, even though removing it may cause a miscarriage. If Mirena cannot be removed, talk with your healthcare provider about the benefits and risks of continuing the pregnancy.

My daughter is six weeks pregnant with the mirena still in. She is getting conflicting advice from different health care providers. How dangerous is it to continue the pregnancy without removing the mirena. Has anyone successfully delivered a healthy baby with the mirena still in.

I am a mother of 4 and I am also recently divorced.. I have been in a relationship for 7 months now and I think I may be pregnant. I have had the mireyna in for close to 4 years and I have never liked it since day one... I am scheduled to go in the doctors office tomorrow to see what's going on. I have had lower back pain, cramping, nausea, dizziness, and increased appetite.. UGH... I wish I knew what was going on with me. I took a HPT and it came back negative so I have no idea what's going on with me...

I have not myself, but have heard of women who have. The decision to remove the IUD can depend on its location and how far along the pregnancy is. There are risks either way, but more towards leaving it in. However, again it will depend on its location. What was the reason the doctor gave for not removing it?

Ask them to do a pregnancy test in the office. They can also do an ultrasound if necessary.

I can honestly tell you that it is possible to get pregnant with mirena! I am currently 6 weeks pregnant with the iud still in place. I go in to have the iud removed in 5 days. They did an ultrasound 2 days ago to see where baby is located and where the iud is located. Thank god everything is where it should be. I'm at high risk of having a miscarriage after the iud is removed, but leaving it in would cause more risk for me and the baby the further along I get. This is by far the scariest thing I've every gone through, and what makes me more angry is that I seen my doctor 3 months ago and he checked the mirena and said everything was perfect and working just fine, a month later I got pregnant. All I can say is if you think your pregnant, go to the doctor asap! You and your baby are at risk!
