My garage has overhead lights on a switch. At the end of the circuit is a hot outlet for the garage opener.
Above the garage is attic space where I need to add lights on a separate switch. Thought I could pull power from the garage door opener outlet for this new switched lighting circuit. How do I wire the new circuit FROM the garage outlet and leave it hot for the garage door opener?

Install a 2 wire plus ground cable from the garage door outlet to the new switch, then from the new switch to the new light.

Thank you very much - I had tried the other direction - going from switch to the lights and ending with the switch since it was at the end of my run.
Also I tried different variations of removing the connector between the duplex outlets (the little brass or copper connector) to leave the outlet hot.
I will try your option today. Does it matter on the wall switch whether black is on bottom or top?

Does not matter on a residential switch, but electricians like all line to use the top connection.
