I'm black, but I've always wanted to dye my hair either red or black, but I heard that for black people if your hair isn't healthy enough it can fall out. How can you tell if your hair's healthy enough? And is it safe or a safe way to colour your relaxed hair, even if it's a dark colour.

Euphoria M,

Firstly, welcome to this great site!

What is your hair length? Do you have cutting or trimmed hair? Have you ever permed hair earlier? Can you post a photo of yours (displaying your tresses/hair)?

I've been perming for several years and my hair length is just at the base of my neck where it connects to my shoulders. I trim my hair when needed.

This isn't just a phenomenon for black people. Any hair that is damaged or poorly chemically processed can fall out, regardless of ethnicity. Curly hair is more fragile though, you'll want to be very careful about layering chemical process, which is what this would be. I think that that any hair that has undergone a chemical process like relaxing should be handled by a professional if you are considering another chemical process. They can evaluate the condition of your hair, and do a strand test to determine if the process will be too damaging. The chemicals in some dyes are not compatible with relaxer chemicals, and you could do great deal of damage to your hair and scalp. You'll at least want to seek a consultation, and get a better idea of the overall condition of your hair and what you should to to protect it.
