Coughing can indicate anything from Kennel cough to a heart murmur. I'm going to ask a few questions, so bare with me here.
When does he most commonly cough? During the day or at night when he is resting? Doe she cough after drinking water or eating? Is it a dry or lose cough? What's the dogs age and breed? Do you know if he is on a regular heart worm preventative? Allergies are another reason dogs will cough.
The only way to know for sure what is causing your dog to cough is for an exam from your vet. In most cases they will need to do a physical exam as well as x-rays.
Even with these questions answered, we would only be taking our best guess as we can examin your dog. Only your vet will know for sure.
