2 months ago I had brown discharge on the crotch of my undies. I never had a period. 1/2 a month ago I had the same discharge thing only it was more brown and on the middle of the brown there was really dark red (what looked like) and now I have been having very light discharge. Also, I have been having this discharge for almost 9-10 months now. Is this my period? I wrote my mom an e-mail about it and I'm scared she won't care or she wouldn't want to talk about it. Help?

Hi missxcandy2,

How old are you? Before periods start, many people do have some discharge as their body starts going through different changes with hormones. This can go on for awhile before periods actually start.

After she reads your e-mail, I would be surprised if your mother doesn't come and talk to you about it. Have you had information from her or from your school about periods yet? If not, now would be the time to ask your mother about what to expect. You can also find very good information online or from books at your library.

If you need help with finding some appropriate information online, just let us know... :)

@DoulaLC, I am 11 years old. After I sent my mom an e-mail, she said it is my period, because she got hers at the same ago, too. Now she is going to buy me pads and pantiliners, but I wonder what kinds I should get. Brands? Any suggestions?

People have their own preferences with the different brands. They are all pretty similar. Go with what your mom buys and see what you think.

Many people like the thinner pads as they are more comfortable. You can also get some that come individually wrapped that work well to keep in a purse or backpack so that you have a couple in case a period starts when you are away from home. Some prefer the sort with wings that fold over the sides of your underwear to help them stay in place better and protect your underwear more at the sides.

Pantyliners are good for when you have just small amounts of discharge... they aren't meant for during your period. Some women will use them everyday just to be more comfortable.
