I've had an ongoing issue with thick white discharge for a year. I've had two pelvic exams (one in April, 2011 and the second in August,2011) I was told that I did not have a yeast infection, that it was most likely bacterial vaginosis because my pH was 6 and I had the discharge. However, I have been with the same partner for 10 months, we use protection 100% of the time, and there wasn't an odor nor did I experience pain aside from the usual menstrual cramps during my period. I took the prescribed medication (500mg Metronidazole) but I am still experiencing the same issues. I have been tested for HIV, chlamydia, and gonorrhea; all tests came back negative both times I was tested. I thought the issue may have been related to my birth control pills (I started the pills in August 2010); so I started a different birth control pill at the end of August 2011. Since starting the new birth control I have not had a period. I've only spotted once or twice during the time that I should be on my period since starting the new pills. I have also taken multiple pregnancy tests, all of which have been negative. I am not sure where to go from here. All of the tests keep coming back negative, I've taken the prescribed meds, yet the discharge will not go away.

The vaginal walls And uterus produce a substance that promotes cleanliness. This white discharge you are experiencing is normal as long as it does not have an unpleasant odor and does not promote itchiness of burning.

In other words, it is normal. I don't know why a nurse or your doctor could not have explained that to you so you need not have concerned yourself.
