Hi,

Yesterday I found two wet spots on my living room ceiling, which is right under attic. I went to the attic but didn't find any water dripping or wet ink from the roof and all the insulation looks dry. It is cathedral ceiling in my living room.

Any thought about the cause of the wet spots? Is it harmful to the house? What should I do to fix it or prevent it? Thanks for all your help!

U have an attic above your cathedral ceiling?

Usually this type of ceiling is formed by the under side of the rafters. If this is the case you will have to go on roof the check the shingles. Measure from wet spot to the top of ceiling. On the roof measure down from the ridge ( top of roof). The problem would more then likely be in this area.

Check for cracked, broken or missing shingles.

If u have any pipes coming up in this area, make sure they are well sealed.

If u have a satellite dish in this area, check the bolts that hold it to roof and seal with roofing cement.

A dish would be a good start, but another alternative could be an exhaust pipe. Sometimes these will deteriorate over time and begin to leak. Generally, you will be able to identify the problem quickly if it is a roof problem. However, don't underestimate the possibility that it could be water coming from a nearby bathroom. Water has a funny way of finding it's way to our visibility.

Some times with a little bit of dampness the ceiling can get a little mold on the surface. It does not necessarily need to come from the attic. Also it might be an old stain starting to show.
