To day we got a 4 week old pit. The mother of the litter turned on her puppies. We really love her, and I want to make sure I can take care of her right. Can anyone help me

One of the best resources on this site, user Labman offers up a list of things you need to raise your puppy in a healthy manner (https://www.askmehelpdesk.com/dogs/various-pieces-useful-information-about-dogs-our-members-53153.html#post251802).

You will also be interested in what he has to say about Housebreaking (https://www.askmehelpdesk.com/251809-post5.html).

Good luck.

I hate to disagree Cliff. If the OP wants advice about raising a very young dog, Labman is the last person I'd ask. I'm only speaking from experience, and I'm very sure the other dog experts on the site would agree.

To the OP. At 4 weeks your puppy will need a lot of special care. He's really way too young to be away from his mother and litter mates, and pups this young don't always fare well.

What are you feeding the puppy? Has he been weaned? Has he been seen by a vet?

Young puppies are much more prone to infection, dehydration, and other health risks. Also, puppies that are taken away from their mom too soon don't learn the things puppies have to learn. These puppies usually have behavioral issues later in life.

I would really talk to your vet about making sure that all of this pups health needs are being met, that de-worming is done on time, shots are done on time, and that everything else is going well. Make sure that the food he's getting is appropriate for his age, make sure that his health is good, and then read up on socializing a dog this young.

Remember that right now the important thing is to make sure that puppy is not losing weight, he's getting enough rest, he's warm, and he feels safe.

This is an old post. Why does cliff keep opening old posts?

I didn't even notice that. I figured since Cliff posted, it must be new.

I do wonder why it was never answered in 2011. But you, it's pretty old, and I doubt that the OP will be coming back. :(

Owners are trying to clean up old unanswered questions. Unanswered questions lower our frequency of hits on Google and lower our usage and profits. I agree with Alty, gave greenie, Labman was very gruff and grumping and is not a good referral. This pup is away from its litter at least 3-4 weeks too early and will need special care and miss out on valuable lesson from mom and litter mates. We have all done our jobs, the post is answered and we will likely never know how this 4 week old, now 5 month old, pupis doing/

You could have at least picked an active expert Cliff... Or more up to date information. Labman's advice is dated at best.
