I am 35 years old, and have had the mirena IUD in for almost three years now. I have not had any problems with it, and love it. However, I think I may be pregnant. My breasts have grown an inch already and hurt like crazy. I am nauseas and back aches. Also I have bad headaches and cramping and shortness of breath. I know this is all signs of pregnancy however, I have taken two test and they say negative. My question is can the IUD effect the test results? Or if I am only two or if you drink a lot of water will it not read right. I really feel like I am pregnant but and am worried what they do with the IUD if you are?

My research says that if you are pregnant the Doctor removes the IUD.

Thank you, now if I only new if I really was. I sure feel like it and my breasts and stomach are getting bigger. Nothing else is. I have all the symptoms and the tests say negative so I am nervous. Is it safe to get it out after your so far along?

Hi cammie35,

The IUD won't effect the results on a pregnancy test, but since you are feeling as though you might be pregnant, best to see your doctor about a blood test.

If you are pregnant, the IUD will come out if its location is such that it can be done easily, as JudyKayTee mentioned. There are some instances where it is left in place when the risk of trying to remove it outweighs any risk of leaving it in.
