My shower has a metal sprout, above it is plastic water control handle and on top is handheld shower sprayer.The plastic handle suddenly didn't work. Took it off and part of the inside rim edges are broken. I took this, metal sleeve and faceplate to plumbing supply store--was told it was a Moen. Replaced plastic handle according to package instructions and it worked great twice. Now it is slipping-not controlling water flow/temperature. Noticed wasn't gripping the protruding metal sleeve. Do I need to replace the cartridge too?

My shower consists of metal spout, above is plastic water handle and on top hand held prayer. Replaced Moen plastic shower handle yesterday (as it wouldn't turn water on) and it worked well twice. Then it decided not to stay firm enough to turn water on. I re-tightened the main screw that hold handle to faucet and the handle still not holding firm to work. Now I can't remove the screw. It moves(turns) but won't budge. The area on top of screw is not stripped so thinking the screw itself is? I didn't overly force the screw so doubt that's a reason (?). Used pliers to no a vale-it turns but not moving in or outward. Have a made a mess? More going on here besides handle screw problem?

Do I need to replace the cartridge No! The handle screws into the stem of the cartridge, The chrome metal sleeve stops the handle from turning completely around. It should be seated firmly in the valve body. Make sure the knob is seated firmly on the stem and that screw that holds the knob is drawn up tight . Good luck, Tom




re-tightened the main screw that hold handle to faucet and the handle still not holding firm to work. Sounds like you've cross threaded the screw and now it won't tighten completely leaving the handle loose. Remove the screw and check the threads. Try to start it correctly. Good luck,Tom

Load the threads up with WD-40 and put some muscle into backing it out. There's no doubt in my mind that it's cross threaded.
If it's impossible to back the screw out then drill out the screw to save the handle and replace the cartridge and screw and start over again. Good luck, Tom
