We have a State Select electric water heater (M/N ES630DOLSG). We have a well and an odor problem on the hot water. I want to replace the anode rod, but I cannot find it on this model. There are three plastic "lids" on top, but only styrofoam underneath them. There is a recessed area on the outside. Is that it?

The manual doesn't identify its location from what I could see.

Also, I should probably chlorinate it. How to do that?

Hi Mike...

In your case, the anode rod is probably under/attached to the cold or hot water nipple going into the water heater (see image). I don't know which side (hot or cold), but you should be able to find out pretty quick by contacting State industries @ State Industries - Solid.State. (http://www.statewaterheaters.com/)

Chlorination should not be necessary if this is only an issue with the anode rod.

Thanks Mark... I wrote to State Industries via their website three weeks ago and I have never heard from them...

The problem we are trying to solve is an odor problem. ONLY the hot water (we are on a well) smells. The water tests show no sulfur in the water. I'm thinking the anode is corroded and adding to the odor (? )

I'll try State again!

Don't write them... call them @ 800-365-8170

No doubt that the anode is the culprit. It may simply be that the magnesium anode rod has been used up and needs to be replaced, or you may need to change over to a zinc or aluminum anode rod.

Discuss with the TECHNICAL SERVICE DEPARTMENT when you call, OK?

It sounds like some minerals have leeched into your water and have interacted with the magnesium anode rod in your water heater creating hydrogen sulfate gas. The rod is located under the large looking nut on top of your heater. REmove the insulation and look for a large nut. Replace with a zinc or aluminum anode rod.

Ahhhh... not necessarily, Tom. Nowadays, you can find the anode rod under the nut like you said, or more often the anode rod is under the hot nipple as a combination anode rod (or even under the cold nipple in some cases)... ;)

I know for a fact that RUUD heaters still have the regular one (under nut) like you're talking about, but if you upgrade to a 10 year warranty the plumber removes the hot nipple and installs a combination nipple/anode rod into the hot water outlet.

I'm also pretty sure that State and A.O.Smith use only the combo. Rods, but wanted Mike to check directly with State industries to be sure!
