I am under an agreement to work part time as work becomes available with a contractor. This (2011) I worked from January until April and won't be working anymore until next year. I have sent in 3 quarters of estimated taxes based on that income. There is a good chance that the contractor that I have the agreement with will have work sometime next year. Should I continue to file as self-employed next year, even though I might not be working yet and possibly might not get any work at all.

I'm not sure what you mean by "continue to file as self-employed." Your filing status on your income tax return has to do with whether you are married or single or head of household, not how you work. If what you mean is whether to file estimated income tax form each quarter in 2012 - that will depend on your income each quarter; if you earn self-employment income in a given quarter then you should file an estimated tax return form for that quarter. Finally, if you are asking about filing Schedule SE - you will file that with yor 2011 taxes in April of 2012 because you were self-employed in 2011. If you earn self-employment income in 2012 then you will also have to file Schedule SE when you do your 2012 taxes in April of 2013. Hope this helps.
