I bought a mutual fund many many years ago and forgot about it. At the time of purchase I named my now ex wife joint tenant, we have been divorced for 20 yrs. I am now remarried. How do I remove my ex wife from this fund? It is under my SSN. Thank You

If this was an unknown or hidden asset at the time of your divorce you may have to go back to court to have it divided. It will not likely be all yours. What would happen if you asked your ex to back out and sign off on this fund?

Thank you for your Quick answer! In regards to the ex backing out that would be my first thought however, over the years she has filed false financial claims against me, though I provided documents and got my money back, in the process of proving I owed her nothing, I lived without my usual income. Retired, U.S. Army. Is it possible to remove her and add my wife (current)?

Additionally (sorry forgot to mention this) if memory serves me correctly I purchased this fund prior to that marriage, added her as joint tenant after we were married.

If she is listed as a joint tenant, then she is a part owner of the fund. The fund should have been part of the division of marital assets. The only way to get her name off is to have her sign off or to go back to the divorce court and have her ordered off. You could sell off the fund, give her the half that she owns then reinvest with your current wife. Only this time make her a beneficiary, not a joint tenant.

I agree with Scott, she is as much of an owner as you are, lesson learned. Save court costs by offering half. If she refuse sue to force the sale and maybe your court costs.
