What would you say to someone who is not technically savvy in order to explain how a general model of telecommunications works?

One of the more interesting things about this univere is that many of the more sophisticated things (like a telecommunications network) resemble other more primitive things (like two tin cans connected by string) if you just think outside the box a little. So talk in more basic examples while maintaining the same principles so that you are working with what they do know.
