Unbelieveably, the earing was in the J-trap even after 20 seconds of the shower running. It took 2 hours, but I got it out! I used a Tygon tubing to get the water out of the J-trap and then soaked the last bit out by gently inserting a paper towel. Then I put a nylon stocking on a hanger and gently pulled the earing toward my side of the J-trap. The earing was not visible because the low point of the J-trap is slightly beyond view. But you can hear the earing move against the PVC. I used a screwdriver to pull the earing even closer and then used a forcep in my free hand to grab it. It took about 20 tries to get this to work. A flashlight is required; I used an LED type that is light and was able to hold it in my mouth.

Note that someone was taking a shower in an adjacent bathroom while I was retrieving the earing.

A friend told me that peanut butter at the end of a screwdriver would have been easier to grab the earing. In the alternative, a grabber (those three prong grabbers at the end of a 18 inch long cable) would have knocked an hour off the process.

Because the earing mounts are suspect, we are getting the earings remounted. As the earings were 1/2 carat, we solved several thousand dollars.

Hi Jeff and welcome to The Plumbing Page on AMHD.
You piggybacked on a 1 year old dead thread so 7 gave you one of your own. Before you post look in the upper left hand corner for the date..
Thanks for the update and information. This should help a lot of folks in the same situation. Thanks again, Tom
