I live in Florida now and I am head of household.. ny state is garnishiring 15% of my wages... I was in an agreement with them to pay 100 dollars monthly so theyn stopped... back in October my son was a passenger in a bad car accident and was is the hospital for 3 weeks and needed some home care... I missed a lot of work and didn't have the money to send the loan so the started the garnishment again... I called them to tell them what happened and she said that it didn't matter... its going to continue unless I put down 500.00 to stop the garnishment... I don't have 500.00 now.. so what can I do.. I wanted to continure to send the 100 but she said no... I can't afford 15% of my pay to be taken.. help!!

You should have called them BEFORE they reinstated the garnishment. Frankly, there is nothing you can do. You owe the money, they have a judgement against you.

Hello lorine:

I understand your situation. You want to know what choices are available to you. The problem is that once you have a judgment, your choices are severely limited. As you discovered, the state doesn't care about your problems.

If it takes $500 cash to stop the garnishment, then you have to raise the cash. Get an advance from work. Sell cans. Have a garage sale. Sell your car. I don't know. (But, DON'T go to a payday loan place!) I think you have no other choices... None that I can think of anyway.

Of course, I didn't mention bankruptcy, because that's going to cost MORE than $500.
