My ten month old golden retreiver recently started not walking at all on her hind legs. I took her to the vet and they did x-rays, they said she has a slight bit of hip dyplasia but not enough to cause her problems. They think it my be in her nerves. Any advice?

There are all sorts of levels of vets and you need to seeka higher level, maybe one that can do MRIs and mpre diagnostic evaluations. I had a great old gal who got sick very quickly. My vet ran up an $ 1800 bill before telling me to go to a specialist. One hour later we were looking at pictures of her fatal cancer. Do not accept this vets opinion, seek better medical advice. This could be a slipped disc or worse.

The vet has referred me to a specialist. I am very concerned about the price. I love my dog, but I have four children I have to feed as well. Very scared I am going to have this large bill and still lose my puppy.

I recall your posts recently as to your dogs' problem, seems that it has been going on for a little while now.
If in this time you have seen a decline, I'm inclined to agree with Ballenger.A specialist or even a second opinion will be in her best interest.

Try not to lose heart before you speak with the specialist and he/she has a chance to figure out the problem, although I understand your concern.
I was a single mom for a very long while. (grown now) but I remember how being responsible for little ones feels.
Get through the initial appointment and let us know how it goes.

You say she isn't walking at all with her hind legs... she must be dragging them along? Or what?

If she is simply dragging them along, I agree... it possibly involves her nerves, more specifically her spinal cord. Loss of function in just the back legs involves nerves about the level of the last 2 or 3 vertebrae. I doubt she has a disk problem, but it may be an infection or even a tumor in that area.

I hope the specialist is a neurologist. X-rays are usually pretty useless in demonstrating soft tissue problems like nerves.
