Hello, we were contacted in August 06 regarding a debt owed to a company here in our hometown. This company contacting us is using the heading of a law firm but after looking into them they are nothing but a collection agency. We have called and requested four times now for some type of paperwork showing they are legitimate and actually hold our debt. We have already made the mistake of making some payments to them. They are flat out refusing to send us any type of statement on money already paid to them and anything verifiying they have our debt. What should we do and are we out the money already paid?:(

Check with the company in your home town to see if they sold your debt to this company. If they did sell the debt your probably should start playing ball. If you truly owed the money and have defaulted you could be in line for some unpleasant actions by the collection agency. This could include placing a lien againist you and/or your property.
