My fan has an attachment plate with rubber grommets between the ceiling and the plate; while reinstalling the fan from a paint job, the grommets punched through the ceiling and now the fan is unstable. Is there any device as in a ready made metal disk or plate that can slide in between the ceiling and the attachment plate to stabalize the fan with out having to put up new sheetrock in the ceiling? Sounds like your fan box is set too far back in the ceiling. The plate should be flush with the box and have a slight clearance at the ceiling. Did you use an approved fan and fixture box or just the old box? Could also be poor support of the ceiling box.
