How many times should tape be wound around the threads?

Most plumbers will probably tell you four.

Twice is plenty, once is OK.

And some time you will need more, Thanks.

Hi guys:

I'd have to say that it depends on the size of the fitting/thread and the material and the width of the teflon tape... ;)

If we are talking about a 1/2" copper male adapter going to an outside faucet and we are using 1/2" wide teflon tape then 3-4 wraps are fine.

If we are talking about an 1.5" copper male adapter going into cast iron and we are using 3/4" wide teflon tape then I'd have to say 4-6 wraps works best, but if using 1/2" teflon tape it is more like 6-8 wraps.

A larger threaded pipe/adapter, say 2-4" gets even more!

With that being said, you can't overdo the number of wraps, especially when dealing with PVC or ABS fittings... can crack the female fitting.

You will undoubtedly get many different answers, as you already have, so it really is an experience thing!

To each his own, Three wraps with half or three quarters tape. On larger threads I wrap all the threads up and down until I have three wraps. As Mark pointed out, you may have to use more wraps on larger threads but wraps have always held pressure for me. Best of luck, Tom

I don't think I've wrapped anything but a showerspout. You plumbers are certainly tolerant. I learn a lot.

You probably listen to NPR while you work. My builder friend always knows the latest news, science, books, car talk before I do, and I think, when does he have time? Duh, radio!
