I have an American Standard toilet approx. 13yrs old. Over the last month the constant dripping has worsened and is now a constant running of water. I tried tightening the link attached to the handle but it made no difference. I was advised to replace the flapper... I have purchased a Tank Flapper 3 Way- Universal Fit All. I drained the tank and found a rusted hook at the bottom of the tank. The other hook was still attached to the overflow tube but there was no chain anywhere!! My major problem is that I cannot remove the old rubber flapper from the bottom of the cylindar shape tube which is attached to the handle by a linked chain.
I am afraid if I try and force it, the plastic cylindar will break. Plus there seem to be quite a few more pieces to this new flapper than the one presently attached. Help!1.

The American Standard toilet will not work with the universal replacement flapper... must get specific match for your toilet.

Does your flush valve look like the picture on the left or the right below or other? Let me know, OK?

Thank you for responding. You were so correct. I did have the old style and the new flapper was useless.
With a little help from a friend I managed to remove the old flapper and took it to the harware store where a retired plumber advised me to purchase a complete unit. Once again with a huge amount of help the new unit was installed. I now have a toilet that works.
