I would like to see if it is possible to keep a red fox in australia, victoria. Anyone have any light to shed on this?

Don't know about Aussie laws but I know that in Russia if you can tame it you can own it.

You need to contact your proper authorities about obtaining an exotic animal permit to be legal about the fox. You need to check out thoroughly regarding required paperwork or you could be heavily fined and the animal taken away from you and you possibly sit in jail because you owned an endangered species (for instance).

My Russian lady friend owns an Arctic White Fox, female. Didn't get too large and most people think it's a fluffy dog. Nice temperament and friendly. Fox ownership in Russia is not unusual. Just remember your new fluffy friend is nocternal and likes to dig so beware of this otherwise the fox could dig a big hole in your new carpet trying to dig to China or your chair.

My friend put little bells on her fox's front legs and had her sleep in the same room as the owner. Every time she heard the bells ringing she would jump out of bed and make the fox stop digging. She did lose a new bed and a new carpet but eventually after a month or so the fox stopped digging. Quite a feat to train a wild animal not to do something they do by instinct.

Good luck with your new friend. Hope you like to party at night a lot.

Thanks. I'm not worried about the endangered thing. I'm more worried because the red fox here was introduced for being hunted originally, and are now considered a pest here. And I really hate the thought of them being slaughtered for fun. So I'm happy to save at least one. Hopefully a girl as I would assume the guys are more territorial. And apparentaly they are really hard to tame due to their instincts. It would be great if you could tell me more about how your friend tamed it and all.

She bought her White Fox female from a breeder farm in Russia. It was a wild fox originally but the breeder saved her from haarm and brought her to his breeding farm.

My friend also has a huge Arctic Timberwolf pure blooded that was bred in captivity. Now the wolf is around 250 lbs. Big Girl.

The wolf and the fox get along very well. Oddly the wolf had to correct the fox all the time and had to inspect her food all the time..

You need to have a very young fox for it to tame properly. Adults are really not tameable as a rule. Her fox was less than 6 months old.

She has the fox, wolf, and believe it or not a small female cat with her at all times. The fox gets a bath at least once a week being white.

She feeds the fox raw meat mixed in with veggies. This is "old" meat bought from a local butcher shop. Raw fish from the same butcher shop. Basically she is trying to mimic what foxes eat in the wild.

She feeds the wolf almost the same diet. Foxes are scavengers - keep that in mind.

You need to spend a lot of time with the fox kit to properly tame it down. The more human time the fox gets the quicker it tames down. The same as you would tame down a puppy.

The fox is house trained and only goes outside with the wolf and kitty.

thank you so much for the info on ages and food and all. It kind of surprised me that your friend manages to keep the fox and wold from killing the cat, but I guess that's another amazing thing I can tell people. I think no matter what I do though, I doubt that there will be a breeder of red foxes here. As in introduced pest, people are prompted to kill them if they can. Makes me sick, anyway, if you have anything else you could tell me then that would be great, if not, then thank you again for your help ^^

Anyway, as much as I appreciate the help the previous answers have given me, I would really like an answer from an Australian that knows the facts about the legal system on this matter.

Funny you should mention about the wolf eating the fox. When she went to the breeders to get the fox, the owners too thought that the wolf would eat the fox. She came back about 2 months later to collect her bet she had made.

Odd the wolf does not even bother the cat. The wolf does give "wolf rides" to a trained monkey at the base where she works. The monkey knows to stay away from the other wolves and only ride the female wolf. He hikes himself up using her fur ruff and she walks around the mess hall with him on her back then he gets off and runs back to his owner, a ship's commander. He takes the monkey onboard his vessel. He gets to keep it as it's a "helper monkey" and the brass just scratch their heads and let him keep it.

That's pretty cool, I wish t was as easy as finding a fox breeder here. From what I know, the red fox is the only breed in Australia, with the exception of importing, which I do not want to do. And every time I look up something to do with the red fox, I just find something either about how they came to be in australia, or how someone should kill, hunt, etc them. Like I said before. It makes me sick.
