I have a moen single lever valve and when pulling up on my shower diverter spout knob (whatever it is called), more water comes out of the spout then the shower head, filling up the tub with water. How can I get the all the water to go up to the shower?

Hi John,
First, remove the shower head and see if it is clogged... ;)
Otherwise, you really can't repair these tub spouts. Most likely you will be best to purchase a new DIVERTER TUB SPOUT and install a new one.
There are usually only two types and both are pretty easy to remove/install. If you look under your tub spout and you see a u-shaped cutout in the spout, near the wall, then you have a "SLIP ON" diverter tub spout and you will need an appropriately sized allen wrench to remove the allen screw inside that u-shaped cutout. After loosening the allen screw, the unit should just spin/rotate and be pulled off. To install the new "slip on" tub spout, purchase the new spout and a little silicone grease and grease the o-ring and the pipe end and push the new spout on and tighten the new allen screw.
If there is no u-shaped cutout on the underside of your spout then the spout should just unscrew... usually need some pliers here. To install the new spout, should just need some teflon tape for the threads and the new tub spout and screw the new one on.
While you have the tub spout out make sure to caulk the hole at the tub spout pipe if it isn't already closed off, OK?
