I intend on buying a friend of mine a transportation device. He really needs a way of getting round besides public transport but lacks both a way of getting his licence and the money needed to buy a car/motorbike.

I'm trying to figure out what would be the best option to take.
Both 2nd hand cars and motorbikes/scooters can be bought cheaply. In terms of petrol though bikes are much cheaper. On the other hand I think insurance is higher for bikes. But bikes are much less safe and require buying appropriate clothing which adds an extra cost.

The biggest advantage to a bike is that my friend can teach himself to use it as opposed to requiring another driver.

Anyway I don't know much about cars or bikes, besides what I mentioned, and would very much appreciate advice on which option to take and possibly how to go about getting one.

Thanks in advance,

Before we can offer any sensible advice we really need to know your location, country at least.

Hello P:

People who LIKE bikes, REALLY like bikes... People who DON'T like them, REALLY don't like them.. So, before I bought my friend one or the other, I'd ask him what he wanted.

I have talked to him. He does like bikes. It would suit him pretty well in fact.

The biggest advantage to a bike is that my friend can teach himself to use it as opposed to requiring another driver. Hello again, P:

I don't think that's true. Besides, driving lessons are TEENY compared to the cost of the vehicle. If it were me, I'd feel MUCH better about my ROOKIE driver friend if he was driving a CAR instead of a motorcycle... But, that's just me.

I don't know that a bike is for everybody, takes a little more awareness, reflexes, coordination, the street is a dangerous place to learn. Age can be a factor.
How someone rides a Bicycle can be a good indicator on how they might handle a Motorcycle.
Bikes are Great, cheap on fuel, easier parking, Rain can be a pain.
