Generally, our modern societies give, today, the impression of living deeply unsatisfied and marked by sadness and boredom. We have at our disposal all sorts of material comfort and technological means that should make our life, at least theoretically, much easier. Yet, most of the time we constantly complain. Despite having so many things, It looks we are missing something essential which we find it difficult to identify. And most Christian communities –at least in the Western world – seem to have been impregnated by the same virus.
After Jesus’ death, his followers were totally disenchanted. They were sad, they were afraid and hiding, and they could hardly realize what had happened. Their minds were hit and could not absorb the enormity of it all. They thought their Master had left them for good. To the extent that, to make them react, our Lord appears before them, Resurrected, to change their sadness into joy, and tells them “Receive the Holy Spirit”.
In the same way, we Christians today also need to recover our illusion, our convictions and our decision. We must have peace, joy and new strength if we want to successfully face the dangers our materialistic world opposes before us. The memory of Jesus Christ first followers may help us to achieve this reacttion.
The feast of the Pentecost allows us to live again with joy and become true witnesses for the Gospel. The only thing we have to do is to accept the gift that Jesus Resurrected gave us: “Receiving de Holy Spirit”.
