Does your job description include the monitoring of such things as the condition of stairways? Did the loose stairway result in an accident of some sort?

If you were aware of it, and the damage to the stairs caused someone to be hurt, yes you are very wrong.

You may not have broken a law but you have demonstarted a lack of respect or concern for the safety of anyone who may use the stairs. Your sup is not the only person to ever use the stairs. If part of your job is to inspect or look for safety concerns then you may have opened yourself to liability in a suit.

It is not part of my job to inspect stairways or any other equipment.

But I didn't mean for the person to get hurt. That's the maintenance man position to inspect the stairways and if they where cleaned every night then someone else could have reported it.
