Can I be taken to court for theft under 5000 for keeping a car someone bought for me when the insurance and bill of sale is in my name?

Someone bought the car and the bill of sale recited that you were the buyer? And they are now claiming that you stole it? Doesn't seem likely that you would be prosecuted for theft. Are there other pertinent facts you have not told us?

I fail to see what insurance has to do with it. Who paid for the insurance?

My now ex wanted to buy me a car. I originally said no. but he convinced me otherwise and said it would be all right. At the end of our relationship I left with the car. I have been paying for the insurance ever since it was bought and have invested a lot of money into it because it was broken down.. which is why I didn't see it fair to leave it after I have put roughly 900 dollars of work into it. And Yes the bill of sale and insurance is in mine name because he said he bought it for me and he also doesn't have a license. Now he is claiming I have stolen his car and that he never gave it to me. Telling me he will be sending me a court date if I don't send 2500 for the car or give it back (the car was original bought for 800 but on the insurance papers it says 100) I don't want any trouble with this guy and don't think he has a strong court case. I'm wondering if it will go through to court and if I'll have to save money to get to the court date.

... I ... don't think he has a strong court case. ...
I don't think so either.

... I'm wondering if it will go through to court ...

I doubt it. I would bet that he's bluffing.
