I don't know how it's tested, but as for repairs if mold is present, it depends on the mold and the surface area covered.
Surface mold can be cleaned with bleach and a rag. Mold in the walls would mean tearing out the existing walls and replacing everything (drywall, installation, framing etc). This needs to be done by professionals and can take a while.
They would also need to find the source of the moisture and repair that to prevent mold in the future.

There are many test kits available, here's one Mold test kit review (http://www.toxic-black-mold-info.com/moldtest.htm). A professional abatement company will use a more sophisticated version. The repair question is a tough one since you can't start removal until you find the cause and fix that, like Altenweg said. Please tell us more, are you a prospective buyer of a home with mold or what? I had mold in my crawl under a bathroom due to an overflow. I dried it for a week with dehumidifiers and then sprayed it with a kit I bought at Menards for about $20, its clean as a whistle

Most normal "home inspections" like when you are buying a home does little to inspect for mold unless it is very very obvious ( you can see it) and they will just note on their report that *** there appears to be mold at *** so and so location
To fully check for mold, the area where it is out, may have to have the wall or other areas removed to look behind the mold.
Depending on how much and how bad, it can be a simple wipe off or it may require 10's of thousands of dollars by professions to remove

Sorry to hear you have had mold - not fun! I suggest you think about getting a petri-dish from one of the online laboratories. They send you a dish - you follow the directions then send it back to them. These mold test kits can tell you what kind and how much mold shows up in the test (though you may only need one) of their visible mold tests. I have a client who runs a lab and I will include their link at the bottom in case you are interested.
If you do have mold, treatment is key. There are companies that sells natural mold removal products which I have used before. The one I used was a candle that I lit for a couple hours. Worth a try to check them out.
