First, make the substitution cot(x) = cos(x)/sin(x) and tan(x) = sin(x)/cos(x). This gives you
\frac {\frac {\cos x} {\sin x} - \frac {\sin x} {\cos x} }{\cos x + \sin x} = \frac {(\cos x - \sin x )} {\sin x \cos x}
Now cross-multiply, and you're essentially done.
