The power to the Grundfos circulating pump was off for about 30 minutes, and when the power came back on the Grundfos pump started making a loud whining noise. I powered it down and since then have tried re-powering but it continues to make the same noise. Does the pump need to be replaced? Thanks

Check farthest faucet if you have problem with the hot water, then you may have a bad pump but it certainly no danger, worst case it just won't circulate water anymore, In this case, just get it replaced, Also you can call Grundfos for advice the may send you a new pump, good luck.

Hello Scubagolf: You have to re-prime the pump. There is a large screw in the middle of the pump. Turn pump ON. Unscrew it until water starts dripping out continuously. Also, as John suggested, open hot water faucet in farest plumbing fixtures and let it run for few minutes. See if the noise stops. Back to you. Milo

I am enclosing pic of the pump. The screw is the large, shining screw in the middle of the circular part of the pump.

Milo gave you excellent advice, I was not sure of the screw for priming, and thanks Milo.

Thanks Milo and afaroo, but it's not correcting the problem. At first I accidentally unscrewed it too much and the screw popped out. I reinserted and have let it drip for about 45 minutes with the pump plugged in and running and with a hot water faucet at the far side of the house running. The faint whining noise has remained the same.

A plumber looked at it and I have a bid for $500 to replace the pump. Yikes. If it must be replaced, so be it, but he did not try to re-prime it or even mention that possibility. (This was before I found your advice on the net.)

Can you think of anything else I can try?

Scubagolf: It is possible that the pump got damaged. If you are a bit handy, you can replace it yourself - especially, if it is mounted on unions or flanges. It is quick switch-over and takes few minutes. Depending on size, pump will run you about $250.00, perhaps less.
