View Full Version : Can I commit my Mother to rehab?

My mother is addicted to prescription painkillers and takes antidepressants, and possibly hormones as well. Her physical and emotional health has been worsening for the past 3 years, and now she sleeps all day, will yell/scream at her boyfriend (who is about to leave her), has drastic mood swings, claims to have excruciating pain all the time (despite the pain killers), and has even shut out her own children.

I feel like she needs to do a hard reboot. She does have physical problems (fused spine from scoliosis) which have affected her hips, knees and neck, but it wasn't always this bad. She has put on a lot of weight (50+ lbs) since being laid off 1.5 years ago, and while she says she has the best of intentions, she still lays in bed all day sleeping, keeps off hours when she is awake, and she is scaring us kids. We are concerned that if her boyfriend leaves her she will lose it (even more than she already has) and we don't know what that will mean for her. She doesn't have any place to go, she's currently on state disability, and can't live with any of her children or her parents.

Can I get her committed someplace where they can help her cope with emotional issues and well as her addictions? If so, how do we go about that? How much does that cost?

Thank you!
