I have found the following resources regarding the refurbishing of a fireplace surround with tiles. The first resource I found is from the DIY Network, here they show how the ceramic tiles are laid out, adhesive and grout troweled over the fireplace (http://www.diynetwork.com/how-to/how-to-install-a-tile-fireplace-surround/index.html), etc.
Here is a great YouTube video that shows how to install marble tile around a fireplace (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ViTPr4jIT9o). And, this is a fantastic video overview of someone tiling a fireplace (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fKlp1xX57Hk).

Is this current surround a faux brick on framing or is it structural brick making up the actual fireplace? Countless faux materials are available including but not limited to tile. I have used Corning faux stone and Eldorado stome many times and the finished llok is great. Eldorado Stone (http://www.eldoradostone.com/flashsite/)
