The first garnish was more than 25% of my disposible income. When I went to get the notice they sent me I couldn't find it. How, or how can I get a copy of this garishment notification. I think the company was out of chicago. Please help. Thanks.

You have probably had credit card debt and 'some' collection agency has obtained a judgment against you and your account has been drained, right ?

Social Security has not garnished you, a previous creditor has. You have not been up to date on your transactions and thought you could get away with just forgetting your commitments grannyfranny. That doesn't work.

Your social security payment is probably deposited in your bank account and, the bank can't diferrentiate the payments coming in, a judgment has been awarded, so you are drained... right ?

What was actually garnished? What type of SS payments. Some SS payments are exempt. However, if your bank account was attached then it was your assets, not SS that was attached.

Were you not aware that a judgment had been entered against you?

Oh, it was an overpayment on ssi checks in 2002. I got a letter the 7th and 25% was taken out the 10th. Simple. I don't have any other creditors. I'm just going to have to breathe deep. They didn't touch my bank yet? Yikes. The best advice I got was: quit your job and move. Nice. Yep, grannyfranny has lived long enough to step up to the plate... wow! I'm having trouble understanding WHY SS bothered to hire a collection agency to sue you, get a judgment, and garnish your wages, when they COULD have simply recovered their money by REDUCING your present SS payments...

If you DON'T have a copy of the notification they sent you, your employer DOES have a copy... I'd sure like to know what it says.

If I'm understanding this, you were overpaid on your SSI in 2002. This was found so they are taking out 25% to recover the overpayment.

If this is the case, then you weren't sued, this was simply an administrative correction. Would have been nice if they gave you more notice.

If this is not the case, you need to explain this better.

I got a job in 2002 so they stopped the ssi. Again, it's time to pay up. Thanks for your time. Getting responsible is just that. Guess I should be thanking social security.
