My house was built in 2002 and the basement was roughed in for a bathroom. There is a larger pipe sticking out from the slab, (obviously for the toilet)and there is a 2" pipe sticking out as well. My question is is that 2" pipe for a shower, tub, or shower/tub combo or does it not matter. I was under the impression that a 1.5" pipe is for a tub and a 2" is for a shower but I'm really not clear on this. Please help I really want a full bathroom with tub/shower combo but breaking up the cement floor is not an option.
Thanks, Crystal

Sounds more like a 1/2 bath if there are only 2 pipes, I would assume the small pipe is a sink drain. In order to have a shower or tub use that pipe, you will have to elevate the tub or shower to install a trap if you don't want to cut the concrete. Are you sure you don't see a plastic box in the floor, along the same line as the drain? Sometimes it is covered with a thin layer of concrete. Tap the floor with a hammer and listen for a clunk sound. Sometimes it is under the wall plate. See any gravel filled hole?

Sorry I didn't explain my situation better. There is a 3rd drain for the sink as well it is next to the toilet inside the bottom plate of the wall framing. The 2" pipe for the tub or shower sits across from where the toiled and sink will be. The 2" pipe for the shower or tub is 19.5 inches away from the outside wall and 16.5 inches away from the interior wall. If I am able to frame in a tub/shower combo is it code to build a raiser for the tub to sit on since the floor drain isn't in the correct position to be located directly under where the hole in the bottom of the tub is.

Yes, many tubs are installed that way because of drain issues and so a trap can be installed. You'll need to go up about 6-8". Build a nice tile step up. Can you say Jacuzzi? Look at some bathroom remodeling mags for examples. Good Luck!
