hi I just installed windows 7 ultimate on a dell from 2002ish that ran windows xp and has a pentium 4. now I have no sound; red x on speaker setting in task bar.

device manager > other devices > multimedia audio controller and pci input device have yellow flags.

my sound card is a unimodem half-duplex and does not show a yellow flag.

when I right click any of these 3 devices and select scan for hardware changes it says "installing...etc.." and then says not instaled successfully. Also can't find any updated drivers.

Usually after a fresh operating system install, the motherboard's chipset driver needs to be installed first so that the rest of the devices are detected properly. Drivers for the remaining devices can then be installed.

can't find any updated drivers.

Dell's website has drivers for all their systems. There is a service tag number on the machine that can be entered on their website to access information specific to the machine. However, given the age of the machine, Windows 7 specific drivers may not be available on Dell's site. If that is the case, check the websites of the individual device manufacturers.

Or there are no Win 7 drivers for your sound adapter. You should have checked compatibility before installing.
