I worked in NJ for 4 months and worked in VA for 8 months. Taxes were taken out for both states obviously. I am wondering if I am suppose to get all or most of the taxes paid out to VA back being it is not my resident state? Do I claim credits for each state on the others returns or just credit for VA on the NJ return? It seems that I am not getting back enough of the money I paid out to VA. I also am confused about what wages should be put on each return. Do I put the full amount listed in box 16 less va box 16 on the NJ return or just the wages in box 18?

First clarify - did you moe to VA, or did you continue to live in NJ and commute each week to VA. If the latter, then you file a non-resident tax return for VA, and you will owe tax to VA in the waqes you earned while working in VA. However - don't be surprised that you have to report your total income to both VA and NJ - that's so they can see that you are being consistent with the numbers and to determine your tax bracket. But for VA yo will only pay taxes on your VA source income. After you calculate your VA taxes, you then do your NJ return. Again, you report your full year's income and calculate a preliminary tax on that full amount, but then you take a credit for taxes paid to other jurisdictions - namely VA. Hope this helps.

Thank You! I file non resident VA, full time resident NJ. I use a software for my taxes. I received a 51% credit on NJ tax towards the VA taxes paid. Got 100 bucks from VA. Oh well! I thought I would have received 100% of tax back from VA and applied that to NJ but VA tax does not allow it except from like 4 states...

Right - some states have reciprocity agreements that allow non-residents who work in that state to pay income tax to their home state instead. NJ has such an agreement with PA, but not VA.
