I have an 8 year old Trane dual heat unit and a 6 month old Amana 5 ton Heat Pump which replace an 18 year old heat pump. The electric consumption has increased since the new Amana was installed and it was supposed to be more efficient. In November the service technician found head pressure of 350 psi and removed enough freon to get it down to 225 psi which reduced the noise factor in the unit but did not reduce the high electrical consumption. 2 months later the new service technician diagnosed the problem as being a restriction in the coils causing the heat pump to work harder than it should. The service man then began to sell me on a complete new, "more efficient" system for $5400 or a new coil for $1500. I checked all the lines from the heat pump to the coil to ensure they were not kinked or damaged. Is it possible the coils could be clogged?
