Hello! I am a US Citizen from Indiana and I married a British citizen in 2010 who lived here all year, but didn't have any income. He is in the middle of his permanent residency paperwork, but has not filed yet and does not have an alien number or a ssn. I have been using Turbo Tax and they want a ssn. What can I do? Also do I have to file married if it won't take the ssn? And what does the IRS consider to be a 'resident alien'?

You need to submit the tax return (Form 1040/1040A/1040EZ) with Form W-7 to get him an Individual Tax Identification Number (ITIN), which you will use to file tax returns (federal and state) until he gets his SSN.
