I read this book in The Detective Book Club format and I'm pretty sure it's from the 1940's.
An actor hires his double to attend an event for him while the actor goes away for the weekend. While he's gone the double is killed and everybody thinks it's the actor who was killed. He decides to let everyone continue to think he's dead and pretends to be his own double as he looks for the killer.
