I drove the car for an hour in the morning then I pulled into the garage with no problems, a few hours later I started the car, it was fine until I put the car in reverse. A very loud screaming noise came from the car so I quickly put it in park. I turned car off and restarted, again the same problem. I did a transmission fluid flush and replaced with new tran fluid. The noise has stopped but the car still will not switch into any gear. The shifter will move but the car will not. Normally I can hear the shifting but I get nothing, what could be wrong and how do I fix it with out going to a mechanic?

Please help! I do not know anything about this and my car is the only one I have!

Supper stressed now!

Thoughts

. Move gear shift lever through each gear:

Replace dip stick, start engine, and, with the car level, move the gear selector through each gear (PRNDL), pausing 5 seconds in each gear. Warm car up to normal operating temperature, place car in (P)ark on a level surface, and check the dip stick with the engine running. Ensure fluid comes to the top of the “Full” line.

. Check for codes.

. Test all under hood and under dash fuses with a test light or multimeter:

If you have not been dropping and cleaning the pan, changing the filter, and replacing the fluid (Mercon V) every 30,000 miles, the clutch packs may be shot. This is especially true if the car has over 100,000 miles on it. ATXs are the weak link on all FWD cars--they need to be meticulously maintained.
