Even if you had all the money in the world you would do well to find a group, and they are more likely to be free or sliding scale anyway. If you feel uncomfortable you can bet that at least half the others do too, and the facilitators are pretty good at keeping them smooth and safe feeling, and finding different types of groups for you if you aren't a good match. Young, old, drugs/booze, excons, mothers to be, grievers, recently divorced, AIDS, gay/lesbian, caregivers of aging parents - there's a group for everyone.

If it's still too much of a struggle, walk into the nearest clinic and say you are depressed. If they are swamped and just give you some anti-depressants (many don't have the funds for private therapists), ask for a referral to a group. Medications alone are usually useless. If you have no money, tell them. You have to be living on something, so what? Family support?

Here is a link to Depression and Bipolar Association (http://www.dbsalliance.org/site/PageServer?pagename=home), a national organization with vouminous contacts and available resources. They can generally get you in contact with resources in your immediate area meeting your financial requirements and treatment needs. Wish you the best.
