My grandson was born in Ca. in 1992, due to circumstances he was only given his mother's last name. I recently sent for copies of his birth certificate. What does he have to do to have his mother's name removed and his father's last name put on his birth record. Both mother & father's name r on birth record. His father (My son passed away 2/10/2010, right before my grandson's 18th birthday. In any event would like to know how this can be done without having to incurr a lot of expense. Would appreciate any information re this matter asap.My grandson now has a child of his own & has given his baby his son his father's last name.He stated he did not want to have to have both his & his son's last name changed. Any information would be greatly appreciated.Looking forward to hearing from u . Frances Parks

You can't change the birth record.
If your grandson wishes, he can go to court and change his name, but the birth record remains the same.

The easiest and cheapest route would appear to be just doing a legal name change though the courts, he can do that without anyone's permission since he is now an adult.
