Hi. I have a dilemma on my hands. OK, I worked for walgreens in February to may. In that time I took $65 worth of merchandise, I was called into the office and was told to either confess or the they would call the police. I confessed and was given the rest of my pay for the time I worked, also paid what was owed to them from the stolen merchandise. Also I had to write a letter stating I did steal from them and signed it. They told me no one was going to find out of this situation. I was walked to the door and basically let go. However, that same day I go to do applications, I go to cvs, family dollar. A couple days later I get letters in the mail showing my background has theft on it and the price of the merchandise that was stolen. So my question is, why is it on my background and I was never arrested or anything for it? It is ruining my life over this previous situation. I can't get a job anywhere because of it being gon there. I'm scared that if I push it in court I can get charged with it and screwed over worse than I am now. No one will hire me. Since may of 2009 I've turned on applications and all denied over this theft being on my record. Why? And what can I do?

I was 21 at the time also if you need to know, I know that's going to be the first thing you ask. I forgot to post it.

There are dozens of different background checks, first a police background check would have taken weeks to get info added to it and only after you were either ticketed or arrested.
If you are using the store as a reference, showing that you worked for the store in your work history, the store is telling them.
Also there are 100's of private background companies that do not operate under the same rules as the police background check, they find out info from many sourses and house that info and provide it.
So if it is true and if it got into some record someone, there is little you can do about it.

Uh-that made no sense. But thanks anyway. I can't remember if I put them down or not but I always look at it like your supposed to be honest and straight otherwise they'll find it out and not look at you twice. And my reference I out down don't even know of the situation so that's not the problem. I asked how would it be on my background if I was never arrested, I was let go. Never charged either. All I did was pay for the taken merchandise.

There are private background companies that find and use data that is not on the police report
